Tips and Odds on the Crowne Plaza Invitational
The big PGA Tour Golf event this weekend is the Crowne Plaza Invitational from the Colonial club in Fort Worth, Texas. Tiger Woods is not in the field but it is a pretty strong one and they’ll be ready to do battle for a prize fund of over $6 million. Genie has done some homework, looking at the betting odds and form, to come up with his golf betting tips of the week.
Key Betting Tips
The most striking thing that I always notice when looking at the form on the Colonial golf course is that those at the top of the leaderboards here bears massive resemblance to the chaps who perform well at Augusta National. Kenny Perry has won here twice; once by 6 shots and once by 7 shots. Phil Mickelson has won here twice. Tim Clark has been runner up in the past 2 years. Steve Flesch is a patchy player but has won on this course and appeared in the top 20 on many an occasion. Flesch is, if you’ll remember, going to get a small investment from me every time he turns up at Augusta. It is quite simply a course that gives him his best chance of winning a golf tournament.
Players To Watch
With this key information in mind it was not long before Genie picked out the value. Angel Cabrera has never played this event at Colonial. He is having a very good season, without being rewarded with a victory. El Pato turned down the chance to play at his beloved Wentworth last weekend and should be well rested and is, in my opinion, primed to do well here at Colonial. It is extremely unusual for Genie to tip a man with no course form but the direct correlation between the Colonial and Augusta form books means that I am going on a limb this week because I believe that 66/1 is too big a price for a player of the calibre of El Pato, a noted Augusta expert.
My second tip is another guy that won’t appear on the tips of Jeremy Chapman or the like. I am tipping the little known journeyman Rod Pampling. The Aussie currently resides in Texas and all that I should really need to tell you is that Rod Pampling has a better record on this course than anyone in the past 5 years. Last year he had a couple of poor rounds and a couple of decent ones with a 68th place finish. However, in the previous 4 years, he finished 2nd, 12th, 3rd and 6th. Pampling has also perform admirably around Augusta the only 3 times that he has played The Masters. Stats like these make Pampling a good e/w bet at 100/1 with most bookmakers paying 5 places.
2 othe players that deserve note are Brian Gay and Kenny Perry. Kenny is a course expert and is in decent form. He played pretty well last week but a poor score on Sunday cost him any chance at the title. 40/1 would definitely not be a bad e/w punt on the vintage wine that is Kenny P.
Brian Gay is from Fort Worth and is in a decent vein of form. He has been one of the most improved players on tour in the past couple of years and a -7 final round last Sunday will fill him with confidence in front of a home crowd. I won’t be backing Gay however because 40/1 is just too short with so much quality in the field.
