Opportunity Lost: Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather

Genie · January 12, 2010 ·

Pacman and Money Mayweather will not be getting it on in March and my first thoughts as a boxing fan are, what a shame. My second thought quickly swithces to the opportunity that has been missed.

I never seem to be surprised any more by the pricing of Pacquiao when it comes to his matches. He continues to be underrated and it is quite baffling how bookmakers are making him the underdog for this one.

Floyd Mayweather is a great fighter, but a cowardly champion. He continues to hand pick every one of his foes and it is clear as day that he orchestrated the whole drug testing farce in order to avoid the inevitable Pacquiao bout. Looking at his recent opponents Marquez, Hatton, De La Hoya, Baldomir, Judah, Mitchell. Missing from this list are those that he should have been fighting – aka Cotto, Margarito and PACQUIAO. Hatton is the only one that could be considered to have been world class and not past his prime. He laboured to a win over De La Hoya; a man since dismantled by Pacquaio in such clinical fashion (in another fight wher Pacquiao was underdog remember).

Pacquiao, on the other hand, is the best and bravest fighter in the world at the moment and has been for the past 5 years. His record in that time is like a who’s who list of the world’s best. After finishing off half of Mexico (Morales, Barrera and Marquez) Manny decided to keep going up in the weight in search of tough opponents… he destroyed Diaz, Hatton, De La Hoya and Cotto with little fuss.

In his corner he has the brilliant Freddie Roach who is proving to be the wiliest coach in boxing right now.

Pacquaio is the perfect ambassador for boxing; a man who is more interested in taking scalps than taking belts, who doesn’t become obsessed with protecting his record and who is more that willing to keep defying the odds by shifting through the weights, never asking his opponents to do the same. In short, he is the best fighter that i have seen in my lifetime and Genie would have been placing his biggest ever bet at an expected 6/4.

He should be 4/9 and yet he is available at 6/4 if the fight goes ahead.. if only Mayweather wasn’t running scared then Genie would be filling his boots.

Greyhound Racing Betting

Genie · January 11, 2010 ·

Greyhound racing is one of the most popular sports in Ireland and is a fundamental part of the gambling business, despite being less profitable than horse racing. In Ireland the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) is the legislative body that is responsible for the development and control of the Greyhound industry.

Irish Greyhound Board (IGB)/ Bord na gcon

The Irish Greyhound Board, or ‘Bord na gcon‘ is responsible for the seventeen licensed tracks in the Republic of Ireland. Not all tracks are owned by the board however as some are operated by private enterprise.

For information relating to Irish greyhound betting and race results, race nights or different tracks, it’s best to have a look at the Irish Greyhound Board website as they run a comprehensive website covering all aspects of the greyhound racing setup in Ireland.

African Nations Cup Betting

Genie · January 10, 2010 ·

There is no doubt that the African nations are getting better and I expect a strong challenge from Ivory Coast at this summer’s world. The Ivorians begin the African Nations as deserving favourites and the 9/4 available with several company’s is probably not a bad punt. I am looking for value, however, in what has proved to be a quirky tournament for results in the past.

I am tipping up the unfancied Mali team to upset the odds and at 22/1 they represent the undoubted value for me.  To begin with they have got a relatively easy group which includes the hosts Angola, Algeria and Malawi. They take part in the tournament’s opening fixture against Angola. The teams met 11 months ago and that resulted in a 4-0 trouncing for Mali. There is no doubt that being the host nation offers a slight advantage but I cannot see past Mali and Algeria as the main 2 teams in the group.

Mali do not concede many goals and with the excellent Mahamadou Diarra of Real Madrid offers excellent protection in midfield along with former Liverpool man, Momo Sissoko. Sissoko may not be comfortable with the ball at his feet but he covers the ground as well as anybody and will make it difficult for the opposition.

The eyecatching  players in the team are Seydou Keita and Freddie Kanoute (21 goals in 35 games). These 2 players will ensure that the goals keep coming and that Mali are a constant threat in attack.

No team will win such a top tournament with just 4 players of course and these lads are ably assisted by a team full of experience.

The Mali team have flattered to deceive in previous years but I think it’s different this time. They are a team very much united behind their excellent coach, Stephen Keshi (who guided Togo to the last world cup), and they are a squad full of players who have bags of experience and have just hit their prime.

My advice to you is to back Mali for tournament honours. They are 9th favourites according to the bookmaker’s but a squad with this experience and talent should rank up among the top contenders. The Ivorians are the only team that i could truly say have better players in the competition.

Recommendation

Mali to win the African Nations Cup @ 22/1 with Ladbrokes. (e/w is 1/2 odds for top 2).

Mali to bet Angola @ 2/1 with either Bet 365 or Ladbrokes

Australian Open Betting 2010

Genie · January 9, 2010 ·

Andy Murray is getting better with age and I expect a big 2010 from a more mature Andy Murray. Having hit form at all the wrong times last season the Scotsman should be a little more canny this year and will be primed for the Australian Open.

On top form it is Genie’s opinion that Murray currently the best hard court player around.  He won 6 titles last year; 5 of them on the hard surface. Each of the 5 hard court victories had a world class field. Federer may have won 2 grand slams last year but he is definitely a player in decline and is a much more appealing prospect for the improving and fresh Andy Murray (who has a 6-4 win record over Fed don’t forget).

Djokovic is a consistenet performer but he doesn’t have the x-factor required to beat an in-form Nadal, Del Potro and Murray. Del Potro is of course a bag of natural talent and is proving to be a more consistent performer these days but back-to-back grand slams is a lot to ask. Davydenko is playing his best ever tennis but I just can’t back him at anything less that 20/1. He has had an excellent few months but historically has been found wanting against the big boys over 5 sets.

Andy Murray can rule the hard courts in 2010 and 6.8/1 is too big a price for such a proven performer.

Value seekers could do worse than to look at last year’s unlucky semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco, who toppled Murray last year and should really have beaten Nadal in the semi.
Verdasco is currently avalaible at 50/1 with William Hill

Recommendation
Andy Murray to win the Aussie Open Men’s Singles @ 7.8 with Betfair.

If going for fixed odds then take Ladbrokes’ 6/1.
